The state's next interview for a big federal education grant is set for next month.
New York was named one of 19 finalists, and is hoping to receive $700 million out of more than $3 billion in the nationwide "Race to the Top" funding.
A team of state officials is set to push for the grant during a second-round interview on August 10 in Washington, D.C.
Among the team's members are city Schools Chancellor Joel Klein.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said New York's progress is a good sign, but he warned on Wednesday that there is still a long way to go.
"I don't think anybody should count this money as in the bank as they say there are 19 other finalists this is a very competitive challenge," said Bloomberg.
Winners will be announced in late August or early September.
