School may be out, but children can still get free meals.
The Department of Education's Summer Meals program begins on Tuesday.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided for children 18 years of age and under at more than 1,000 locations across the city, including schools, libraries, and soup kitchens.
For the first time, the program has two trucks that will deliver meals to playgrounds and beaches.
"We think it's a wonderful opportunity for parents especially in this economy to take advantage of two nutritional meals a day they can provide their children," said DOE Deputy Chancellor Kathleen Grimm.
"It's very special. I think that it's challenging at times. It's real remarkable how they progress and make things happen for the kids. As you can see now that's what they're doing now," said one parent.
No application is needed and children do not need to be in summer school to receive the free meals.
The DOE is also once again running the Big Apple games program, where young children can play sports and do arts and crafts.
