The city says its emergency notification plan is being expanded to include public schools.

The free program was launched citywide in May to let people know about emergencies and provide updates on incidents like power outages or transit disruptions.

It will now include updates on delayed school openings, early dismissals, student relocations and temporary school closures.

Those who sign-up will be notified of emergencies by phones, text, and emails for up to five zip codes.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg called the expansion a dramatic improvement in the way the city transmits emergency information to public school parents.

"With these alerts going straight to your computer, your cell phone, your Blackberry, it means that parents now can be practically anywhere and still receive real-time, accurate information about the people who are most important to them -- their kids," Bloomberg said.

"We want every parent to sign up for this. There is no reason on this planet why parents should not sign up," said Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Bruno.
