The Department of Education has reversed a proposed ban on school raffles.

In response to public comments, the DOE has decided to lift a planned ban on raffles run by parent-teacher associations that raise money for school activities.

They have become a fund-raising mainstay since bake sales were banned earlier this year.

The decision is seen by some as a goodwill gesture, since the DOE faces contentious public hearings in January on school closures. But some parents say School's Chancellor Joel Klein is just pandering.

"I think that Joel Klein wants to look like he's being responsive to parents and community concerns and this was a relatively minor thing that he could give in on and it wouldn't make all that much difference, but it would look like he really cared what we think,” said one parent.

The Department of Education also decided against prohibiting its employees from serving on the executive board of the Parent's Association or the President's Council.
