More students are graduating from New York City high schools and going to college, but a new study shows many of them are not ready when they get there.

The study from the Annenberg Institute at Brown University found 70 percent of students entering New York's City University system failed their placement exams in reading, writing or math and had to take remedial courses.

Only about 19 percent had taken college prep math classes.

Of those trying to earn an associate's degree, only 34 percent were able to complete the courses.

The study's authors are recommending better collaboration between the Department of Education and CUNY to help students prepare for college level studies.
