The State Senate will return to a special session this upcoming Thursday to vote on mayoral control of city schools, according to leading Senate Democrats.
During the session, which is scheduled for Thursday, August 6, the senators will also vote on amendments to mayoral control, according to a statement by Senate President Malcolm Smith, Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. and Democratic Conference Leader John Sampson.
Earlier this month, the new Democratic Senate majority hammered out an agreement with the mayor over new provisions, such as expanded power to superintendents, a parental activist training center and a school safety committee.
Those amendments are expected to pass the Senate next week, but will still have to be signed off by the State Assembly later this year.
A spokesman for Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said he will take on those measures when the the full Assembly meets later this year.
Governor David Paterson has said he is in favor of the Senate deal.
The mayor's control over public education expired on July 1 and the Board of Education was reorganized and took control of the school system within hours.
Among the few measures the board approved in its one meeting was a call for the State Senate to revive mayoral control.
