More city teachers are failing to make the grade.
According to figures released Tuesday, the percentage of teachers rated unsatisfactory has more than doubled over the last three years.
The statistics show 1,554 of the school system's approximately 80,000 teachers received the unsatisfactory rating. That is 1.9 percent of the teaching force. compared to 0.89 percent in the 2005-2006 school year.
Instruction skills are the most cited reason for the bad grades, followed by attendance problems.
For a teacher without tenure, an unsatisfactory mark can lead to dismissal.
In response to Tuesday's findings, a spokesperson for the United Federation of Teachers says test scores and graduation rates are up and this is a testament to their highly qualified teachers and the hard work going on every day in classrooms.
