A new report put out by the state Comptroller's office says two thirds of schools audited sold junk food and soda in school vending machines.
State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says at 14 out of the 15 high schools visited, auditors found candy, soda and other such snacks sold throughout the school day.
"School vending machines loaded with junk food, candy and soda are obviously not the best tools in the fight against childhood obesity. The city and the state both have set requirements for physical education and nutrition programs, but if the guidelines aren't being followed they obviously won't do any good," said DiNapoli.
The DOE says the Comptroller's office has raised legitimate concerns and the department will be updating its wellness policy.
School officials also say starting next school year, snack foods in school vending machines will not be sold until after six p.m.
