The Call Blog: NYPD Regrets Use Of Film Critics Call "Anti-Muslim"

By: NY1 News

Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

I think there’s a difference between fighting radical Islam and stigmatizing moderate Muslims, in that the former can be done without doing the latter. And serving up scare tactics that “much of Muslim leadership here in America” wants to “infiltrate and dominate” the United States, as the film claims, along with allegedly monitoring entire Muslim neighborhoods with no cause, only alienates Muslim Americans even more. The department should instead, as it usually does, lead by example and educate their officers on diversity, as there is a lack of knowledge on Muslims, Arabs, and South Asians in this country.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says it was a "mistake" to participate in a controversial film documenting the threat of radical Islam in America. And Mayor Bloomberg said whoever decided to play "The Third Jihad" to officers at a counter-terrorism training facility showed "terrible judgment."

Leaders of New York City's Muslim community say the film portrays all followers of Islam as potential terrorists. They say the video further strains their relationship with the NYPD, following an investigation revealing police have been monitoring predominantly Muslim neighborhoods. They also want Commissioner Kelly to explain why an NYPD spokesman first denied the commissioner was interviewed by producers for the film. What do you say?

What's your reaction to police viewing a film described as "anti-Muslim propaganda" at a training facility? How would you characterize the relationship between the NYPD and New York's Muslim community? Why do you think the NYPD originally denied Kelly's involvement in the project?

Send your thoughts using the link above.

All of these apologies are not really needed by Emperor Bloomberg and the Captain of his Praetorian Guard. They are not sorry for anything aside from getting caught, and now having to back track over their own lies. They are not monitoring Muslims just like the Stop and Frisk policy isn't grossly biased against Black and Latino men in this city. Or like how the Mayor and his cabinet don't slant and skew every statistic from school performance to crime stats. Maybe the NYPD should do a film on how Wall St. and banking industry have raped the people of this city, state and country, or infiltrate them and figure out where billions of dollars has gone.

It's ironic how on the same night NY1 is running this story about the NYPD and Commissioner Kelly's foray into film making, that there is also a story about how the Health Department ran an ad with a photo of a man with his legs digitally removed. This image already had caused some people to feel they were using an amputee as shock value in their campaign against obesity, but the fact they doctored the photo makes it even more dishonest. Welcome to Planet Bloomberg, where rules are meant to broken by those who make them up as they go along.

Maybe Mayor Bloomberg can tell us, if Mr. Kelly or any other commissioner had participated during their tenure on the job in a movie that libeled and defamed the Jewish or Catholic religions, or their adherents, how long would they keep their jobs? Let's get an honest answer, now -- and once we have it, we can all ask why should Mr. Kelly be treated any differently for participating in the making of this movie?

I want to respect the police, not fear and mistrust them. The Police Commissioner's double talking prevaricating behavior is totally beyond the pale! Who will be held accountable for this?

Bill

It appears that the NYPD continues to do what it wants to do with impunity. Hate mongering seems par for the course in the NYPD. The Police Commissioner has lots of explaining to do, but how can the public trust what he says?

Political correctness has its limits. The Arab blood lust for vengeance is far worse than an eye for an eye. We charged the Bosnian Serbs with war crimes v the Muslim Croates and Islam thanked us by flying planes into the WTC. I believe that most religion is an opiate and that man created god. Let the moderate Muslims condemn the extremists in their midst and Ill believe their sincerity and their self-righteous indignation. I don't forgive the Germans or the Japanese either but I drive their automobiles and listen to the three B's, Strauss and Wagner.

THIS FILM WAS DONE FOUR OR FIVE YEARS AGO, CORRECT? COUNCIL ON AMERICAN ISLAMIC RELATIONS AKA CAIR IS TAKING CREDIT FOR THE "INVESTIGATION" WHICH LED TO ARTICLES BY THE NEW YORK TIMES. IF THIS IS THE SAME CAIR THAT WAS LISTED AS AN UNINDICTED CO-CONSPIRATOR IN THE 2007 HOLY LAND FOUNDATION TRIAL, WHICH HAPPENED TO BE THE LARGEST EVER TERROR FINANCING TRIAL IN US HISTORY, WHO CARES WHAT THEY THINK? THERE IS A FINE LINE BETWEEN POLITICAL CORRECTNESS AND HONEST DEBATE, AND FOR RAY KELLY TO SECOND GUESS HIS ACTIONS IS SURPRISING AND COULD BE INTERPRETED AS BRASS WITHOUT BALLS. THIS WAS NOT A FILM ABOUT ISLAM, MERELY ABOUT THE THREAT OF A RADICAL ISLAM MOVEMENT WHICH IS A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE WORLDS 1.3 BILLION MUSLIM POPULATION.

JOE, BAY TERRACE

Encouraging polarizing views concerning particular religious groups have demonstrated to be an exercise in futility. Time has come to heal, to forgive, and to learn from the past and look for conciliatory measures between men and women of all walks of life. Taking sides for or against given religious groups is absurd because there will always be radical and extreme participants in every religious group in the world. Judgment is needed on how to deal with these groups while maintaining a careful distance from unnecessary involvement.

Whatever the subject is these two men Bloomberg and Kelly have stayed around to long. They as the governor and Quinn and all the disciples do as they wish and make decisions behind closed doors. No one is every guilty of anything and they cover for one another and that results in lies, lies and more lies. We haven't fell for this act for quite a few years now. We on the other hand must abide by their man made rules and continue to have to walk around as though we were walking on egg shells. God forbid we ask a question. There is no such thing. They have just taken complete control over every matter that goes on in this city and again I say we are not permitted to vote or have a say about anything.

There is reason to monitor Muslims more so than others. Why? Just how many non-Muslims were involved in the 1993 and the 2001 attacks on the WTC, the Pentagon and some unknown additional target for the plane that went down in PA?

What is my reaction to this defamation of people of the Islamic Faith being show at a NYPD training facility? Outraged!
The NYPD does much good for our city, but abuses call for better oversight and accountability. In this matter alone, the Commissioner seems to have cooperated with the makers of this biased propaganda, the spokes person lied about it, and the unnamed sergeant who authorized showing it was "reprimanded" (wink, wink). That's not accountability in the eyes of the public.

Bobby G

I don't think there's a problem with the film. Political correctness should not get in the way of truth and reality. If most Muslims are peaceful, why should they have a problem with the loonies of their community being monitored? After all, it was the Irish who brought down the Twin Towers.

Frances
East Village

The NYPD brass lied not once but twice about their involvement in making the scurrilous, inflammatory and bigoted film, "The Third Jihad," and about having used it as, basically, a training film for officers.

Ray Kelly and his deputy commissioner Browne should resign immediately. Anti-Islamic bigotry, like the anti-Black and anti-Latino actions of the NYPD's stop and frisk policies, are tearing apart our city and eviscerating our laws and principles.

The entire community should demand that Kelly resign. We want peace, not hatred, war, and sectarian violence. That means holding the NYPD accountable to the community, and stopping them before they create more anger and division among us all.

Laura

That film and his role in it are a disgrace to the city of New York. He should step down. As a woman who was born in Manhattan many years ago, I am ashamed of this.

Alexandra

Third Jihad and other movies produced by The Clarion Fund specifically state that not all muslims are terrorist.... Only a select few. It is sad how people cannot see the greater picture and understand that this only focuses are the extremist radical islamist that are terrorist. i.e. less than 1%...

We have enough problems worrying about our government taking away our freedoms and signing laws that go against our constitution. The real terrorists are running our country.

I'm an American, born in the U.S. It's time we started acting more like the Israeli's on this subject. To stop being so politically correct and deal with the Muslim threat. Most people don't understand that the global Muslim population is replicating at an alarming rate. They are doing this on purpose because they will eventually VOTE IN, THROUGH THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS, their own leaders. You will soon see more and more Muslim Representatives in the U.S. Congress.

This is not good for democracy because ISLAM AND DEMOCRACY CANNOT CO-EXIST. Because their religion doesn't allow for many of the freedoms the U.S. Constitution provides. Freedom of Press and Freedom of Speech just to name a few.

This threat is real. Wake up America!!!

Josh

Yes, it was awful that NYPD promoted this documentary and they need to do something to counteract this failure. But when you say Ray Kelly should resign, this affects things far removed from Muslim relations, like everyday crime fighting. These are important too. Why should the whole city pay a price in the continuity of crime fighting because NYPD went wrong on this issue?

One year during Ramadan, in my Southeast Jamaica Muslim Community, a NYPD police car was parked every evening and night with it's strobe lights glaring in front of our mosque. The children and women had to endure it. Yet, the two times I called for a police officer in my neighborhood in the last 6months, they never showed up.

J. Malik

How come we never hear "good" Muslims protesting the radical Muslims around the world. Americans are not giving you a bad name your own people are giving you a bad name. I'll be in the counter protest you have against my police commissioner.

It's absolutely horrendous that Commissioner Kelly lied about this issue when asked about it before. If this wasn't an issue, why did he lie? What else is he lying about? We can't have our safety in the hands of a lying commissioner. I think the best thing for him to do would be to resign.

We did not kill the Native Americas, we did not in-slave the Africans ,we did not bomb Japan and Vietnam, bin laden is the product of Saudi Arabia and USA in the 80. Just do the research it is not fair to hold my religion responsible for the crime of few.

Thanks for having a rep from CAIR on your show, speaking negatively about those using email to express themselves.

Did you know that in 2007, CAIR was named, along with 245 others, by U.S. Federal prosecutors in a list of unindicted co-conspirators and/or joint venturers in a Hamas funding case involving the Holy Land Foundation,[2] which caused the FBI to cease working with CAIR outside of criminal investigations due to its designation?

as a police officer in the NYPD working in the upper west side, I have to say first that the NYPD officers who are born in this country and who do not live in the 5 boro in NY and do not have any interaction with the different nationalities that live in the 5 boro and classify every Indian ,middle eastern, Asian. etc, as a terrorist do not need to be a police officer,,,,i see it every day but i cannot educate them,,,,the department cannot educate them.. ...there is no right or wrong answer......its sad

As the number one target of RADICAL MUSLIMS, New York City has the right to show this film to law enforcement. They are on the front line.

It surprises me to find so many muslim americans who are offended by this considering Hezbollah and radical muslim groups have killed fellow muslims all over the world.

This film has a message. Not a politically correct meassge, but one that needs to be recognized as a real and serious threat, both here to the western world, as well as muslim countries.

This film specifies radical behavior/ jihad agendas.

It does not make a blanket statement, and should not be interpretted as such.

Mainstream muslims are not vocal to any degree to denounce terrorism. If there was a loud anti-terroist, anti-radical voice, there woule be a different interpretation of this film.

It seems unfair to envoke your American Civil Rights at convenience.

There are negative stereotypes to every ethnic group.

As I am watching the show and seeing these people protest over Islamic terrorist which is not the same as the Muslim religion. I find it so odd that they did not show that same passion and protest when our soldiers were dragged thought the streets or after 911. Perhaps they should spend more time protesting the terrorist and less on they NYPD who protect and serve their country and freedoms.

Was Islam's prophet radical?Didn't Mohammad himself engage in over armed 70 raids? Didn't Mohammad slaughter an entire tribe of Jews taking the women as sex slaves, even marrying a widow who's husband he'd murdered? Didn't Mohammad, himself condone slavery-owning several slaves himself?

Josh

If the Muslim Community is planning on going down to City Hall to demand Commissioner Ray Kelly's resignation over this film being viewed by the NYPD and that he also participated in -- they can forget about it . . . it is a waste of time. No member of the Bloomberg Administration or no cronie of his is ever truly held accountable -- they can practice any discriminatory behavior that they so choose!

Lisa

What a shame to know a commissioner like Ray Kelly who is suppose to encourage
"Law and order" participate is such a thing. I am so shock ! It shows somewhat
discrimination. They already not hiring people with muslim names so what more
in store ???? I love America and would love to see UNITY !

You need to read the Koran to see what it says about Muslims and violence. The Koran urges Muslims to kill Jews and Christians because they are infidels or nonbelievers. Muslims who kill Jews and Christians are rewarded with 72 virgins in heaven, the Koran states.

This talked about ant-Muslim film that was used by the NYPD might indicate rooted racism within the system probably originated from the top. Yet this film seems to be the least of the NYPD's actions that can be perceived as offensive or dangerous. NYPD has admitted for cooperating with the CIA in spying after legitimate peaceful citizens who's only "crime" was being part of the local Muslim faith. This act is not just offensive and redundant but also illegal for the CIA is by law prohibited from operating on US soil. It was also published and confirmed that the same NYPD conducts surveillance on our fellow citizens who change their original name to a Muslim name or people with Muslim names that left the faith and 'Americanized' their traditional name, just like many millions of immigrates
who did over the course of the last 200 years when entered this country to look for a better life.

We can only hope that one day the NYPD will serve and protect the citizens and obey the law.

Every era has its controversial alarmist films, like "Reefer Madness" at the beginning of the
war on drugs and the hysterical anti-communist films of the McCarthy era. But it is wrong
to show such films to government personnel, in government facilities, while they are on duty.

Even if this film wasn't a training film per se, someone should have known better, and, apparently, someone did, as they complained and subsequently made the story public.

Yes, Islamist terrorism is a threat, but Islam is still a religion that deserves respect. Every ethnic group has its extremists and miscreants, and each group can be accused of not doing enough to criticize members of their own group when they misbehave. But tarring an entire people with the broad brush of suspicion erodes the very liberties that the terrorists are trying to extinguish.

I am a caucasion Muslim NYC police officer who has been with the department since before 9/11,,many of my co workers never new I was a Muslim and I never heard any biased comments regarding Muslims. The nypd works excellent to maintain a strong and fair relationship with the Muslim community in NYC, this video does not represent what the nypd is trying to accomplish with any of our residents. God bless America and god bless NYC.

Something people need to remember: If every member of the NYPD had locked up every Muslim in New York City on 9/11, that still wouldn't have prevented those planes from crashing into those buildings. There are extremists in every religion: Singling out one religion for suspicion does no one any good at all.

Chris

Unfortunately the radical Islams are the only group that have committed terrorists attacks on Americans, Christians and Jews throughout the world.

Stop apologizing in the name of political correctness. Not only should the NYPD have permitted the viewing of the movie, it should be required viewing for all police officers.
We are at war with Islam for two reasons:
1. It is not a religion but an ideology with geopolitical aims and ends; and
2. Islam (not just the terrorists) is at war with America.

Ask your guest if Sharia law should be enforced in US courts.

Robert

Ray Kelly should resign. Who knows how these officers will treat Muslims after seeing "The Third Jihad"? 1,400+ officers may treat Muslims differently now because of what they've seen. This is unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable.

Dania

In my opinion the nypd is not being trained by watching this video. it never states that all muslims are terrorists. and furthermore, if the nypd didnt stay on point with the potential threat that radical muslims really do present. we may be arguing about what they didnt do to stop the carnage before it happens. Remember, all gang members are not killers. all catholic priest are not after our children. but we watch all of them. just in case....

I just want to add that if the muslim community really want to make a difference in how americans see them.maybe they should bring their fight to their radical counter parts. instead of faulting us for fearing them because of what their fellow worshipers are doing. lets be real hear. if some jews started killing and blowing them selves up in the name of Jahova. we would be afraid of them too!

Troy

Ask yourself!? A Highly Decorated Commisioner, one who has made New York Safer.
Since taking the Title. He is just as impressive as Commisioner Lee Brown in the
80's . How 9/11 was so yesterday, And now we forget, we will remember again !

In all Fairness, It should of been titled " Anti-Radical Islam"

Ask Muslims this ! Why don't they speak out agaist radical islam with us...maybe 3%
at 9/11 rallies !

A American Patriot !

My name is Tiffany person am a social activist who believe what the n unjust to citizens and there liberal rights of freedom. We have been created mainstream of why our government will fall into the hands of cilvians. At that point at least all us can be judged fairly with a fair purpose to life. Matters like th accountable action. The officers should analyze themselves before placing a negative stigma in the minds of those who only jobs to protect its people . Nypd be accountable for your upsird ways of thinking .

I watched the first 30 minutes of the film and found it quite insidious.

After a disclaimer that most of the world's Muslim population are moderate, it proceeded to conflate and distort. It explicitly said that Radical Islam is, "the true agenda of much of the Muslim leadership here in America."

It referred to a mysterious 15-page manifesto that it linked with IAP, ISNA, CAIR. I would like to see NY1 investigate said document and accusations.

And those attacks on CAIR? Please. CAIR is the Muslim version of ACORN - also a generally beneficial organization disemboweled by fringe right-wing extremists who had agendas of their own.

The ignorance of many of your callers made me furious. The '"If you have nothing to hide," why not sacrifice your personal liberties?"' excuse is more than concerning. It's naive.

Ever since the 60 Minutes interview Ray Kelly's bubble has burst. Any thoughts on becoming NYC's next Mayor should be tabled.

-Jerry

Okay, let's take Kelly's word, "mistake" or the mistake is, "HE GOT CAUGHT." Why monitor predominate Muslim Community? That's sterotyping because it's not the religion but caused 911 or the religion we faught in Bhagbad and is fighting in Afganistan. It is a group of people who hate the "Western World." NYPD monitoring a community show how ignorant they system is toward the terrorist ideology. Monitor individual behariov.
