Mayor Michael Bloomberg has appointed a new press secretary.

First Deputy Marc La Vorgna will take over the post from Stu Loeser, who announced Monday he is stepping down.

Loeser is the longest serving spokesperson for any mayor in the city's history.

He started working for the mayor's re-election campaign in 2005 before joining the Bloomberg administration.

"A couple of people have asked why, why I'm finally, why I'm leaving. I think the real question is 'Why have I been able to stay so long?' And it's a tribute to the mayor, who said, 'Come to work for me, we're going to change the world,'" Loeser said.

Loeser is the latest member of the administration to leave, following the recent departure of Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.

Mayor Bloomberg says while he's not happy Loeser is leaving, he wishes him luck in the private sector as he starts his own communications consulting company.
