Schumer Urges House To Renew Domestic Violence Bill

Senator Charles Schumer is pushing for legislation that, if renewed by the House of Representatives, would provide grant money to train police officers on how to better curb violence and stalking.
Urging the House to pass the Violence Against Women Act, Schumer said from 2009 to 2010 nearly 55,000 cases of domestic violence were reported in the city.
The bill would also toughen anti-stalking laws and punishment and ensure victims receive resources like legal assistance, counseling and emergency housing.
Schumer said the act has already been an overwhelming success.
"Now, when somebody shows up at the police station bloodied and bruised, the police officer knows what to do, takes action against the husband instead of saying just brush it under the rug, and there is a shelter, a place for women to go," said the senator.
The renewal bill passed the U.S. Senate with bipartisan support on Thursday.
The current law expires in September.
