A report released Monday by the New York City Charter School Center indicated a record number of students applied to city charter schools this year.
Waitlists are now longer than ever.
Of the 64,000 students who applied this year, 51,000 were waitlisted.
The center claims that while the number of charter schools is growing, demand is growing even more quickly.
Charter schools remain a controversial issue. The teachers union filed a lawsuit last week, hoping to stop 18 cases of co-location.
They say when charter schools share public school buildings, the space is not shared equally and charters are given more than their fair share.
Charter schools will educate about 45,000 city students next school year.
