The renovation and expansion of the Jacob Javits Center will soon get underway.

The Public Authority Control Board signed off on the project Thursday, permitting crews to start work immediately.

Workers will be adding 100,000 square feet of expansion space between 39th and 40th Streets, and linking up the space with the current convention center.

In addition to extra exhibition space, rest rooms, food service areas and loading docks are all part of the plans.

Governor David Paterson estimates the project will generate close to $880 million in sales, as well as 9,000 construction and construction-related jobs.

The Javits Center first opened in 1986.
