Police say a Staten Island man turned himself in to authorities on Saturday after he allegedly struck and killed a 5-year-old boy in Dongan Hills and injured the child's mother and sister the previous night. NY1's Jose Martinez filed the following report.
John Sanjurjo, 33, turned himself in, and faces charges for allegedly driving away on Friday night after fatally striking 5-year-old Kyrillos Gendy.
The boy's mother and sister were also hit.
The boy's family is now mourning the firsts that Kyrillos will never get to experience, including pre-kindergarten this fall.
"He's 5 years old," said Adam Gendy, Kyrillos' cousin. "He's got his whole life in front of him. He's lots of fun."
The family had been with relatives at a house in Dongan Hills just before leaving to head home to South Amboy, New Jersey.
"We actually have a weekly Friday prayer meeting here," Adam Gendy said. "So they were actually leaving that prayer meeting, it's mostly women and kids, to cross the street, again, to go home."
Sanjurjo is thought to have been driving a Mercedes-Benz seen in the surveillance image at right. The images were taken as the car was leaving the Deedle Dee Deli on Richmond Road, seconds before the crash.
Family members said the driver knew what he had done.
"He strike all three of them, and right away, he stopped," said Magdy Gendy, Kyrillos' uncle. "He get out of the car. He found them, it's all of them, on the floor. He get back to the car and drive."
Sanjurjo is being held by police and is expected to be arraigned Sunday.
