We may not see Victor Cruz on the gridiron again this season, but the Giants star wide receiver is making the most of his time while he's sidelined with a knee injury.

Cruz's foundation hosted an event at Basketball City in Lower Manhattan to raise money for STEM—or Science Technology, Engineering and Math—programming at the Tri-state area Boys & Girls Clubs.

The interactive Halloween-themed event focused on teaching kids the importance of sports and science education, something Cruz says is essential for kids to achieve success.

"It's good for the kids to see things outside of their norm. I think it's good for them to see what's out there, different art projects, different things and different....other stations here today were really diverse and it was good for the kids to see something different than the monotony of what they see in school and something that kind of gets them out of their comfort zone, so they can see, 'Wow this is things that are really out here in the world and really get an appetite for," Cruz said.

"I think that it's really important because sometimes if you're just sitting in class and getting lectured, you're not gonna have as much fun and you're not gonna retain it as much, but if you're making your own goop and just squishing it, and you're on TV, then you remember it a lot better," one student said.

The event was a joint project of the Victor Cruz Foundation and NY1's parent company Time Warner Cable.

Time Warner Cable’s NY1 Noticias is expanding its public service content.

Our 24-hour Spanish-language local news channel has launched a biweekly segment called “El Abogado a Tu Lado”—or “Attorney on Your Side."

It features attorney Nelson A. Castillo, who aims to provide information on immigration-related issues.

He'll also answer viewer questions submitted online and via NY1 Noticias’ Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Castillo is an author, television commentator and columnist for impreMedia.

"It's extremely important for the community, the immigrant community in the United States to know the laws related to immigration law," Castillo says. "We need to integrate the vast amount of people that we can that are here in the United States to enable them to become fully participant in this democracy that we have."

The segment will run every Tuesday and Thursday on NY1 Noticias on Time Warner Cable channel 95 in New York City.

You can also see it on ny1noticias.com.

The New York Association of Black Journalists gives a special honor to one of our NY1 colleagues.

Queens reporter Ruschell Boone won an award for a series she did on the garbage problem in Jamaica.

Boone could not attend the event, though some other NY1 reporters were there, including Dean Meminger—who served as emcee—as well as Erin Clarke and Diane King Hall.

"One of the biggest things, most significant things about the event is just looking at the accomplishments of black journalists. So I just like how we take time to reflect on some of the work that we've done," said NY1's Diane King Hall.

"The night itself is a wonderful way for journalists from the New York area to get together, to converse, to get to know each other. But also we're celebrating the work that these journalists are doing," said NY1's Erin Clarke.

The banquet benefits the association's high school journalism workshop.

Tennis legend Billie Jean King stopped by the Time Warner Cable studios at the U.S. Open on Wednesday.

King signed autographs and answered questions at the tennis center that bears her name.

She spoke about her many years off the court fighting to raise the profile of women's tennis and give more kids access to the game.

She said she values the time she gets to spend with young players competing at the Open.

"These are the players that I get a chance to listen to," King said. "We do different things. We talk about the history, but more importantly, I talk to them about, you're going shape the future. How do you want the game to look 5 years from now, 10 years from now, because it's your turn. The baton has been passed to you now, and so you're going to have to start thinking beyond just hitting forehands and backhands."

King said one of the most important aspects about the tennis center in Flushing Meadows is that is open to the public 11 months of the year.

You can reserve a court at usta.com.
