Sen. Charles Schumer wants more to be done to protect highly populated areas from the dangers of derailments.

Schumer said that a new deal between the federal Department of Transportation and the Association of American Railroads doesn't go far enough.

The senator was speaking specifically about trains that transport crude oil, saying that he wants rail companies to get rid of outdated cars by July 1.

The cars have been known to spill in a derailment.

He also wants the speed limit changed from 50 to 40 mph in more major cities.

Right now, it only applies to New York City and Buffalo.

Schumer said that while these voluntary standards between the government and rail companies are a good first step, the agreement could go further as an interim measure while the Department of Transportation finalizes the new rules.
