Transit officials say they collect more than 50,000 items a year on subways, buses and commuter trains.

Most belongings left behind are typically wallets, handbags, umbrellas, and smartphones. But sometimes more unusual items turn up, including prosthetic limbs, a pet rabbit, and a diamond engagement ring.

The lost and found's busiest time is during the holidays, when resident and tourist traffic is at the highest.
