The state Senate has confirmed Thomas Prendergast as the chairman and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the Senate's confirmation Thursday night.

Prendergast has served as the interim executive director since January.

Prendergast said the MTA faces challenges, such as improving service and rebuilding from Hurricane Sandy.

The new CEO spent more than three years as president of MTA New York City Transit and six years as president of the Long Island Rail Road.

He replaces Joseph Lhota, who resigned from the post to run for mayor.

It was a long day at the state Capitol for Prendergast, who had to sit through two committee hearings before going to the floor of the full state Senate.

"It's a natural part of the process," he said. "People ask questions. They have concerns. They want to make sure that the candidate that is going to be in the job understands it, and that I have an opportunity to hear their concerns, and that's what those discussions were."
