After the rush of Fashion Week, many style-watchers are left wondering what it all means. While the looks are for fall, many of the trends are already happening right now, and with the Oscars behind us, new styles emerge. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.

Let's face it. Whatever your taste, just about everything that goes downs the runway looks pretty amazing. After all, it's on a model. She's done up with the works from head to toe.

But when it comes to updating your own wardrobe, stylist George Brescia says it's more about mixing and matching.

"When you’re watching the runway shows or you’re seeing things in the magazine, that’s the aspiration," he says. "That’s the designer making the statement that they want to make. They are giving you what they think at the extreme.

"When you go shopping in the stores, you make it yours by getting one piece and not the whole ensemble. You know if it is black and white, maybe you’re doing a black and white accessory, something as soft, not as graphic. Find a way that suits you, your body type with your color, and make sure that you are wearing the clothes and that the clothes are not wearing you."

Some of the biggest trend of course, are black and white, prints, even prints on prints, and tons of texture.

"You have to be careful," Brescia says. "Use it sparingly. If you are doing a texture top, make sure you are doing a smooth bottom."

And vice-versa.

If you can't afford what's on the runway, look for similar styles at a price you can afford. Doing accessories is always budget conscious.

"Maybe you will get a black and white bag, or a black and white belt," Brescia says. "Or maybe do a color belt or a color shoe, or a gem stone earring that has a color.

You always hear about hair and makeup trends, but honestly, we don’t always see something that stands out. This season, though, we’re definitely seeing something new.

"You braid the hair to the head, so all the hair is up and you see the braid coming across," Brescia says.

The extreme side part is also hot right now, possibly done with a cat eye or a beautiful burgundy lip.

"But make sure it is right for you," Brescia says. "There is nothing worse than a woman and she is just wearing a trend. It’s like wearing her."

So stay current, but always stay true to you.

During New York Fashion Week, only one show in the Fashion District made New York its theme and had real New Yorkers model clothes by designers who entirely create and manufacture their clothes within the five boroughs. NY1's Arts reporter Stephanie Simon modeled in the show and filed this report.

Backstage at any fashion show is always hectic, especially when several designers are showing together. It's even more so when real New Yorkers are modeling, including me and Michelle Park, my former NY1 colleague. m

The New York-centric show at The Carlton Hotel in Manhattan's Fashion District was organized by Caravan Stylist Studio, which promotes "Made In New York" fashions.

"The whole concept is that it's 'Made In New York' designers. So they're not just designing and creating, but they actually produce everything in New York," says Claudine DeSola, the founder of Caravan Stylist Studio. "So that is great, to provide jobs to local workers."

The professional models tried to show us novices a few tricks for walking, but I didn't really get the hang of it, so I left the real strutting to them. The show starts with the Callula Lillibelle collection.

"All of my fabrics come from here. My sample makers are here," said Melanie Fraser Hart, the owner-designer of Callula Lillibelle. "If you have it in New York and you do a small run, it's cost-effective, actually."

Park wore one of several looks by Kahri.

"This dress is a silk velvet burnbout with polka dots. It has the chain like mine. My look is rocker chic," said Kahri designer Kahrianne Kerr.

RAE also rocked the makeshift runway.

Asked what it meant for her to be a "Made In New York" designer, Denise Gertmenian of RAE said, "It means to me to have a lot of control over my work, over my product."

The real models wore four looks, I just barely managed to do two. I changed from a Callula Lillibelle into a Tabii Just.

"I love the vibe of the city and I think there is so much talent in the city. There are some really great factories that I've been working with, so it's awesome," said Tabitha St. Bernard, a designer for Tabii Just.

"Made In New York" fashions are just one more way to celebrate New York in style.
