A new workshop is getting kids excited about math and science through creative arts.

About 30 students from low-income neighborhoods gathered for the launch of the four-week program, Connect a Million Minds, in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

It's a partnership between NY1's parent company Time Warner Cable and non-profit 826 National.

Kids learned about the science behind ice cream, deep space and other fun subjects.

"The kids are getting so hands on making ice cream, making gak and then learning about all the scientific properties behind all of those things. And it's a true representation of what Connect a Million Minds is all about," said Leah Gutstadt, public affairs manager at Time Warner Cable.

"To be able to get students excited about science and writing at the same time just synthesizes everything they're learning in school into one big piece. It's awesome,” said volunteer Elaine Palucki.

“They have games for fun in case other kids, like at five o'clock they all finish their homework and we just play games with like math games to help us think more," said Noemi Martinez, a student in the program.
