A major restoration project is set to begin at Rockaway beach.

It includes replenishing the sand washed away by Hurricane Sandy and a refurbishing of the boardwalk.

Equipment is being set up for work, which is being done under the supervision of the Army Corps of Engineers.

A spokesman said that crews are bringing in pipes and other equipment now.

They plan to start pumping sand this month, but have to wait for a specific dredge that will suck up sand from the ocean and put it on shore.

The boardwalk makeover is being done in accordance with a plan that the community board approved in January.

The Department of Parks and Recreation says that the $274 million project will begin this spring and should be finished in 2017.

The new 40-foot-wide boardwalk will be made entirely of concrete and will feature bike and jogging lanes. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
