Escalators at the Staten Island Ferry's Whitehall terminal might soon be back in operation, which should be music to commuters' ears, as many people weary of climbing a long flight of stairs there.
Inspectors from the Department of Buildings will be at the terminal next Tuesday to examine the escalators, which have been out of service since Hurricane Sandy flooded the transit hub.
If they pass inspection, the escalators will be put to use and weary commuters can resume using them.
The storm caused nearly $2 million worth of damage.
Officials say the long repair process can be blamed on a total overhaul of the escalators, requiring complex parts that had to be manufactured and then installed.
