Volunteers of America kicked off its annual Operation Backpack fundraiser.
The campaign collects brand new backpacks and school supplies for children in the city's shelters.
From July 14 to August 8 every Duane Reade Pharmacy in the city will accept donations.
"If the whole New York community comes together and is generous as it usually is and donates new backpacks, new supplies, or cash so we can buy supplies, then we can ensure that everyone of the city's more than 20,000 children living in a homeless shelter today can start the school year looking and feeling more like their classmates with a new full backpack," said Volunteers of America's Rachel Weinstein.
This year the organization hopes to fill 16,500 backpacks.
