The New York State Board of Regents is expected to vote Tuesday to make cheerleading an official sport.
A Regents committee unanimously approved the proposal Monday.
The proposed measure would require coaches to be properly trained and schools to follow common cheerleading safety standards.
Currently, there are no rules governing the length of the season, time between competitions, or how long practices can go.
If approved, the recommendations will take effect during the 2014-2015 winter season.
Currently, 34 states including the District of Columbia consider cheerleading a sport.
