The Brooklyn teenager who was shot in the eye earlier this month received a warm welcome Monday as he returned to school.

An assembly was held at IS 285 in honor of Gama Droiville.

The eighth grader was joined by his family and City Council members.

Droiville, 13, was waiting at a bus stop when he was shot in the head two weeks ago.

Police say the boy was not the intended target and the shooting was gang related.

A 21-year-old suspect is in custody.

Droiville has already undergone extensive surgery and doctors say he will need much more medical care.

"Right now we have to go further to get him to have more surgery to improve the eyes because the doctor said he might be hard to get his vision back," said Jimmy Marcel, Droiville's father.

Droiville also spoke to the media Monday, thanking supporters and asking for continued prayers.

"I just want to say thank you for all the support and prayers and to still keep me in prayers and hope I get better," Droiville said.

The boy's family sought temporary refuge in New York after a massive earthquake devastated Haiti in 2010. Now they are working with authorities to extend their stay and are reaching out for financial help, including to pay bills their Medicaid may not cover.
"Kings County sent a bill to the family for some of the services, we hope it was erroneous, but if it wasn't they're going to need assistance," said City Council member Jumaane Williams.

A website has been set up to help Droiville's family pay for his services.
