The United Federation of Teachers gave the de Blasio administration a warm welcome Saturday at its spring conference.

The two are in the middle of major contract negotiations.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña talked with UFT president Michael Mulgrew about a variety of topics, including her support of the controversial Common Core State Standards, an education initiative adopted by many states.

De Blasio emphasized his willingness to work with union leaders, seeming to draw a distinction with the Bloomberg administration.

"That must not have been the easiest time, to have your leaders saying that you were part of the problem," he said. "Well, let me start with the most fundamental statement. I know in my heart, with every fiber of my being, I know Chancellor Fariña feels exactly the same way, that you undoubtedly are part of the solution in this city."

The UFT represents about 75,000 teachers in the city, plus many other education professionals.
