Parents, students and advocates staged a rally in Manhattan Thursday in support of public schools.

Protesters gathered on the steps of the New York Public Library, blasting new charter school protections that passed in Albany's latest budget deal, which require the city to accommodate charter schools in public school buildings.

They said the new rules pit public school parents against parents with children in charter schools.

"We feel that public schools are getting the shaft, and that the messaging coming from the charter schools is that their children are being abused, and that in fact, it's our children that are losing space in co-located buildings and losing resources and having to share buildings with schools that are better resourced," said Theresa Hammonds of Community Education Council District 3.

Many of the protesters are also demanding that decision-making power over charter schools be brought back into the city's hands. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
