There is a push to include a Halal lunch option on public school menus.

The food is prepared according to Muslim religious guidelines.

City Councilman Rafael Espinal of Brooklyn and the Council on American-Islamic Relations say that there are some 120,000 Muslim students.

They say that without the Halal option, those that are observant may spend the day hungry.

"It has come to my attention that many Muslim students in our public school system are going all day without eating a hot lunch because the lunch options they are presented do not conform to the strict dietary guidelines of their faith," Espinal said.

City Councilman Mark Weprin of Queens also supports the bill and noted that other religious groups, including Hindus, find the lunch options limiting.
