Parents and activists gathered in Manhattan Friday to protest Governor Andrew Cuomo's support for charter schools in the city.
The group rallied in the lobby of the his office in Midtown less than a day after the state Senate passed a budget resolution with some protections for charter schools.
Reports say Cuomo was heavily involved in the resolution.
"Governor Cuomo needs to be a champion for all children and not some," said Zakiyah Ansari of the Alliance for Quality Education. "We have labeled him 'quid pro Cuomo' because obviously, he's gotten hundreds of thousands of dollars from the charter lobbyists and is willing to defend them."
"He needs to focus on the 97 percent of students in this state that go to public schools, and he needs to fund those public schools," said Denise Martin, the parent of a child in a city public school.
The state budget resolution also included funding for universal Pre-K in the city, but did not include the tax increase that Mayor Bill de Blasio asked for as a funding mechanism.
A final budget is due by April 1.
