City officials say that they are making progress ensuring that thousands of kids won't be left out in the cold when they return to school after the holiday break.

Bus routes currently operated by the bankrupt Atlantic Express bus company are being re-assigned to other companies.

The Staten Island-based firm ran about 25 percent of the city's routes, carrying approximately 40,000 children.

Department of Education officials told NY1 that their office of pupil transportation has been working with vendors to sign contracts and ensure no interruption in service.

Atlantic Express officially goes out of business on December 31. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
