The city is touting a $210 million savings after the latest round of public bidding for school bus contracts.

They were awarded in the spring, after a process officials say included bids from some 92 vendors.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the new bidding process ended a three decade old stranglehold that exploited taxpayers and took money out of the classroom.

When the city opened up the bidding process it touched off a month-long strike by bus drivers and matrons concerned about their future.

The city now has some 4,100 other bus routes up for grabs.
