The Department of Education is expanding its after school programs, after Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced on Sunday that nearly $13 million will be invested into the city's Out-of-School Time Initiative this year.

The money will provide 4,000 additional seats for high-needs students in elementary and middle schools, across 30 neighborhoods within the five boroughs.

Since its launch in 2005, the the department says the OST Initiative has provided a mix of academic, recreational and cultural activities for young people after school, on holidays and during the summer.
