City schools continue to get safer as crime takes another dive.

City education officials say this past school year saw a 14 percent drop in major felony crimes and a 28 percent drop in violent crimes.

Since 2000, major crimes are down 56 percent and violent crimes are down 55 percent.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly say the decrease results from the Impact School initiative that the city launched in 2004.

That program required that all crimes committed in schools be treated through peer mediation and negotiation, along with anti-bullying awareness and, if necessary, suspensions.

The department also says that suspensions were down 23 percent over the last year.
