Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott stepped up to defend the mayor's education policies and blasted the mayoral candidates who want to change them during a Saturday speech.

Speaking to a crowd of nearly 2,000 school administrators and principals in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn, Walcott touted Mayor Michael Bloomberg's reforms, but he warned ending mayoral control and rolling back the mayor's policies would be a disaster.

Without mentioning any of the Democratic candidates by name, Walcott accused them of pandering to the teacher's union and putting the future of a million students at risk.

"What these promises have in common is that they would hurt our children in the service of political interests and I find that disgraceful," Walcott said.

The chancellor said improving test scores and graduating rates, coupled with the success of charter schools, is proof the mayor's polices are working. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
