An New York University student was arrested Monday after police say they found five air rifles inside his Lower Manhattan dorm room.
Bernard Goal, 20, is charged with violating a local law that makes it unlawful to possess or sell an air rifle or imitation pistol.
Police say they were called by NYU security to the school's dorm at 80 Lafayette Street just before 6 p.m. Monday.
Authorities say that NYU security told police that maintenance workers observed what they thought were several assault rifles in plain sight on a bed in a dorm room, but were later determined to be air rifles.
Police said they confiscated the air rifles and arrested Goal when he returned to the room.
A student who said she knew Goal called him "respectable" and "outgoing".
Other students said it's a bit troublesome given the recent events.
"Obviously it has to be concerning after everything that's happened it has to be concerning," said one NYU student.
NYU said in a statement that guns of any kind are not permitted on campus.
