A few dozen parents and teachers are fired up about a school closure and the proposed co-location of a charter school.

The closure of P.S. 167 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, because of poor performance had already angered parents.

Now, a New York City Department of Education proposal to co-locate a public school and a charter school there has them even more upset.

The new school, K532, would be phased in next year as P.S. 167 is phased out. Students that are already at the school would stay there, while new students from the area would enter the new school, which would eventually be a pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade school.

However, those students would begin to share the building with a charter school for students in kindergarten through second grade starting next year.

Parents said they are worried that the charter school would be divisive and create inequality.

"They want to put in two new schools in this one building with the lack of bathrooms and the lack of classrooms necessary to hold all of those children," said Tammara Johnson, the PTA president of P.S. 167.

"The DOE believes there is sufficient space in building K 167 to accommodate all schools over the course of all proposals, and that these new schools will provide additional elementary school options to the District 17 community," said Amanda Cahn of the Department of Education.

A vote by the Panel for Educational Policy on the latest proposal is scheduled for next week.
