The last of the 57 Department of Education schools closed after Sandy, Scholars' Academy in Rockaway Park, finally opened its doors Friday.

The school was not only badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy, but was also looted.

Its middle and high school students were relocated to other public schools, many cramming into classrooms in Brooklyn.

Those we spoke with say they are really glad to be back.

"It feels great. It's like my second home," seventh grader Bianca Salcedo said. "It's just wonderful seeing all these faces back again."

"We're looking for some normalcy. We're looking for our routine so we can hit our stride and really dig into instruction and get all the enrichment and everything else going that makes the Scholars' Academy the Scholars' Academy," Principal Brian O'Connell said. "Going back to normal. That's all we're looking for."

Even though thieves stole about $100,000 worth of equipment, students and faculty tell us they will put it in the past and view this is as a fresh start.
