Local lawmakers and the federal government are trying to make it easier for the innovators at the newly created Cornell Tech School to patent their products.

The U.S. Commerce Department is setting up shop at the school's Chelsea campus to help connect students to early-stage investors, intellectual property strategies and government grants.

Senator Charles Schumer said Tuesday this office, which is the first of its kind, will help make New York America's fastest growing start-up capital.

"Yes, there is no reason the institution founded with money from laying [pipes for telegraph wires] cannot be the university that is famous for patenting the next [cellphone]," the senator said while clutching a pipe and a cellphone in his hands.

The school's permanent home will cover a 12-acre site on Roosevelt Island in Manhattan. It is slated to officially open in 2017 and be fully built by 2037. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
