The city's police department will soon let followers on Twitter know about crime and other happenings in their neighborhood.

According to the Daily News, by December 31 all commanding officers in the department must be tweeting.

The Deputy Commissioner for Strategic Initiatives tells the paper that 25 percent of the department's precinct commanders are already on Twitter.

The report says that the tweets will cover everything from wanted criminal alerts to community events.
