The New York City Police Department is conducting an internal investigation after a teenager was seriously injured while in custody over the weekend.
Police say two suspects were arrested Saturday in the Bronx after they allegedly assaulted a 49-year-old man who was walking home from work.
The Daily News reports that during the arrests, 14-year-old Javier Payne was slammed through the window of a hookah bar on Arthur Avenue.
His mother told the paper that he underwent emergency surgery to remove shards of glass from his lungs, chest and heart.
She says her son remains in intensive care at Jacobi Medical Center.
The Bronx district attorney's office is also investigating the incident.
