A man who sources say is a retired New York City Police Department officer on disability has been charged after police say he fatally shot his wife inside their Queens home Saturday.

Police say it happened around 11 a.m. inside 9744 104th Street in Ozone Park.

Investigators say Jessica Canty, 40, was shot several times in the stomach.

She was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.

Neighbors identify the suspect as 43-year-old Kevin Canty.

Police say the couple's two children were inside the home when the shooting happened.

Neighbors say they were taken to a nearby deli where neighbors tried to calm them down.

"I was going to come in here to buy a couple of things, and the next thing I know I see the kids and the kids are crying. They're screaming 'My mommy is dead. My mommy just got shot. There's blood everywhere.' So we try to calm down the children," said one neighbor.

The children are now staying with their aunt.

Neighbors say the couple had a history of fighting, though police say they have no record of 911 calls from the home.
