The New York City Police Department and the city's education department have reportedly brought in a prominent psychiatrist in an effort to prevent tragedies like last year's mass school shooting in Connecticut.

According to the New York Post, Dr. Stuart Ablon of Massachusetts General Hospital will train teachers, administrators and school safety agents on how to deal with troubled students.

The Post says Dr. Ablon's approach looks at ways to avoid traditional punishment for students with behavioral issues, like suspension or arrest.

Instead, he focuses on problem solving, communication, and coping with stress.

The Post says Ablon will start by training staffers at 10 city schools with the highest rates of disciplinary problems and that the program will eventually spread throughout the city.
