Outgoing police commissioner Ray Kelly has turned down an offer for the top job in nearby Nassau County, according to a published report.
Newsday says Kelly, 72, was approached to head the department, but declined the offer.
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano has stated he wants an outsider and a disciplinarian for the position following several police scandals last year.
Nassau County Police has drawn from the New York City Police Department for their previous commissioners, including former chiefs Thomas Dale and James Lawrence.
Kelly has signed a contract to serve as a public speaker following his exit from the NYPD.
