The man accused of stabbing his off-duty police officer cousin is being charged with attempted murder.
Investigators say Angel Rosarino, 64, stabbed the off-duty officer in the neck, face and stomach Friday afternoon in the officer's Bushwick home.
The officer remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly visited the officer in the hospital.
"He went down to have a discussion with his cousin who lives in the building over smoking in the building. And apparently there was an altercation and the officer was stabbed in the neck," said Kelly.
"It's sad," said one neighborhood resident. "You know why? Because for somebody in your family to do something like that to you, here he is on the force, you expect that to be in the streets. You do your tour of duty, and then you come home, and then you have to come home to something like that, what would you think about it?"
Relatives say Rosarino is a military veteran who had been living on the streets until the family took him in.
