A police officer is recovering after being stabbed Friday afternoon, allegedly by his own cousin.

Police say the off-duty officer was stabbed in the neck, face and stomach.

It happened shortly after 3 p.m. in the officer's Bushwick home.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly visited the officer in the hospital.

He said that the argument started over smoking in the house.

"He went down to have a discussion with his cousin, who lives in the building, over smoking in the building, and apparently, there was an altercation, and the officer was stabbed in the neck," Kelly said. "He is in critical but stable condition. It's a deep wound on the left side of his neck."

Neighbors said that the officer is a great person who's lived in the neighborhood for decades, and the whole incident is heartbreaking.

"It's sad," said one person. "You know why? Because for somebody in your family to do something like that to you, here he is on the force, you expect that to be in the streets. You do your tour of duty, and then you come home, and then you have to come home to something like that, what would you think about it?"

The officer remains warded at Kings County Hospital in critical but stable condition.

He is expected to survive.

Relatives said that his cousin is a military veteran who had been living in the streets until the family took him in.

He was taken into police custody.
