The New York City Police Department is debuting some new vehicles that should come in handy should a storm like Hurricane Sandy ever make landfall here again.

The seven new high-water resistant F-250 pickup trucks purchased by the department are specially outfitted to carry inflatable boats.

"We're hoping that, the fact that this is specifically designed for that type of situation, that we won't have that situation," said NYPD Deputy Inspector Scott Olexa. "Certainly, we try to move our equipment out of harm's way. However, when it becomes necessary to go into water situations, we want a vehicle like that this that's going to get us to that location and help us save people."

The trucks feature elevated exhaust systems and an aluminum bed, as well as a ramp to help deploy the boats.

Police say they'll be used in seven flood-prone precincts throughout the city but are designed to move rapidly during a storm. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
