New York City police detective Joseph Cavitolo, known for his cheerful disposition and patient professionalism in working with the city's media, has died.
The 51-year old long served in the department's media office, working under the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
"I have the unfortunate announcement to make that Detective Joe Cavitolo, who many of you knew, he was in DCPI since the mid-1990s, he passed away this morning," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "He was in the hospital. He was undergoing treatment for cancer, but he died about an hour and a half ago. His family was with him."
The NYPD released a statement, saying, "We will always remember Joe not only for his contributions through his work, but also his constant kindness and friendship."
