The city takes the next step in appealing a recent decision regarding the New York City Police Department's stop-and-frisk policy.

The city is seeking a stay from a federal judge over the recent ruling that paves the way for an independent monitor to oversee the police department and changes to the stop-and-frisk policy.

If granted, it would halt the implementation of the judge's decision while the case is appealed in a higher court.

If the judge decides to reject the request, the city can ask the court of appeals for the stay.
