A man accused of shooting a police officer was found guilty Wednesday of murder and attempted murder in two separate cases.

Luis Ortiz was convicted for the murder of Shannon McKinney on New Year's Day 2012.

Police say later that month, Ortiz shot police officer Kevin Brennan in the head while he was responding to reports of shots fired at the Bushwick Houses.

Investigators say Brennan chased Ortiz, who turned and fired, hitting Brennan in the base of his skull.

Brennan survived the shooting.

Ballistics evidence confirmed the same gun was used in both shootings.

Ortiz faces life in prison without parole when he is sentenced later this month.
