Suffolk County police say an off-duty New York City policeman was killed in a fiery crash on the Long Island Expressway on Monday.

Authorities say 30-year-old Joseph Pritchard, seen above, had stopped his pickup truck in the westbound right lane of the LIE near Exit 51 in Melville, when a box truck slammed into him.

Both vehicles caught fire immediately.

Police say the eight-year NYPD veteran was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

It is still not clear why Pritchard was stopped on the roadway. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
